If you’re living in Salt Lake City or Park City, you know how important it is to have an efficient and functioning heating system. The most common heating system in the USA produces heat by burning natural gas or propane. This system costs between $2,500 and $14,000 to install. It is not the cheapest system on the market, but the newest models are highly efficient. Gas and propane systems have an AFUE rating of 90 to 97 percent.

If you decide to invest in a natural gas heating system, it is important to have a licensed professional or HVAC company install the unit. The installation of a new gas line can be tricky. Any leaks in a gas pipe can lead to fire or even explosions.

Once the system is installed, you should set your thermostat. When the temperature falls below the programmed temperature, a signal is sent to the furnace. The furnace’s pilot light will ignite a gas burner. Once the burner is hot enough, a fan will begin to bring air into contact with a heat exchanger. In this way, the air can be heated without touching the burner or flames. Once the air is sufficiently heated, it is forced through the home’s vents.

When the house reaches the desired temperature, as indicated by the thermostat, a signal is sent to the furnace to shut down. The gas supply to the burner is stopped, extinguishing the flames. You may still hear the fan running for a short time as it dispels any excess heated air into the house.

Oil heaters are another option. They are less expensive to install, ranging from $2,000 to $8,000; however, their energy costs can be nearly three times higher than gas furnaces. Oil heaters are recommended for colder climates and more rural areas where it might be hard to access traditional utilities. Oil heaters include a holding tank and often require more maintenance.  Fortunately, oil heaters also have a high AFUE rating of 80-90 percent.
