If you live in Salt Lake City or Park City, you know how important it is to have a reliable and efficient heating system during the winter. When it comes to heating your home or office, there are several different types of heating systems to choose from. Gas is the most common and popular form of heating, but you can also heat with geothermal, boiler, or electric systems, among others.
Gas-Fired Space Heaters
If you are only interested in heating one room or your residence is not too big, then gas-fired space heaters may be a good option for you. Gas-fired space heaters do not have ducts and are not capable of heating large spaces. It takes time and a lot of energy for a gas-fired space heater to warm multiple rooms. These heaters run on natural gas, propane, or kerosene. The best models use sealed combustion air. This process requires pipes to provide air and remove byproducts from the heating process. The unit can be mounted on the wall or left free-standing.
Radiant Floor Heat
While expensive to install and slightly restrictive when choosing carpets and floor finishes, this method of heating is efficient and allows for a lot of personal control. Heat radiates from pipes under the floor. Heated water moves through the system of pipes and warms the designated areas. This system utilizes the principal that heat rises, helping to increase its efficiency.
Ductless, Mini-Split, Multi-Split
While ductwork systems are widely used in the United States, there are some other options on the market, such as ductless heat pumps. Ductless heat pumps utilize refrigerant lines instead of water or forced air to heat the rooms. By using refrigerant lines, this means that you essentially have one system that functions as your heater and air conditioner. In the end, this type of system can be very cost-effective.
Combined Heat and Power
CHP or cogeneration is a method of heating that has not yet become popular, but in the future may be something to consider. A small generator provides electric power to the house. The heat that results from running the generator is harnessed and used to heat the house through a hydronic or water-to-air system. Additionally, the collected “waste” energy can be used to heat water for the home.
